Awards for bravery
Two certificates of merit and three leters of commendation were awarded to North Island men by the Royal Humane Society cf New Zealand, which met i t Christchurch yesterday. A Whakatane man, Mr D. M. Osborne, was awarded a certificate of merit for his part in a rescue in the Whakatane River when a dinghy carrying two persons overturned w-hile crossing the bar in May. 1975. Mr Osborne saw the incident from the shore and with the aid of a surf board reached one man. His son .had been able to swim to a nearby rock out of reach of the six-foot swell. Mr Osborne attempted to take the man to safety of a large rock but was unable to do so. Having guided him to t shallower water he climbed on the rock to signal ashore. Mr D. J. Rankin, w-ho received a letter of commendation, went out on a surf board. and he and Mr Osborne were able to drag the man on to the rock, .where they rested. Mr J. F. 'McLean, who also received ia letter of commendation, went out on a surf board and rescue tube to the son, whom he took back to shore. He then went back and took the father to the beach. Mr H. G. Fletcher received a certificate of merit .for attempting to rescue a passenger of a car which had rolled into the Waikura River at Tahunga, near Gisborne, on August 17. 1975.
