Award to student of Maori
Mr l a mat i Reedy , a student of linguistics at the University of Hawaii, has been awarded the Rangiriri and Whiwhi Martin Winiata memorial bursarv for 197 ft and 1977. The bursary is awarded! usually every two years to a Maori student doing full-) itime post-graduate study,: either in New Zealand or : overseas, says the ?.laori Education Foundation, announcing the award. ' Mr Reedy, a married man ’ with, eight children, is from Hiruharama, near Gisborne. He is of the Ngati Porou : tribe. ’ Mr Reedy trained as a Driniptt' t z.--i in
; primary school teacher at jWellington Teachers’ College pn 1954 and 1955. and later ■taught at Manutahi Maori ■ District High School (primary department), at Ngata, )Te Aroha. and XVeslev Colleges, and St Stephens : school. An able sportsman as well as an able student, during this time Mr Reedy played representative rugby for the East Coast and Thames Valley, and in 1960 toured with the Maori All Blacks in rite Pacifi c. Later. Mr Reedy's interest in the Maori language took him to Auckland University, where he studied part time ■for his bachelor and masters degrees He then worked as (Senior lecturer in Maori studies, at the Auckland Secondary Teachers’ College. : and in 1973 joined the De-' , partment of Education as inspector of Maori and Islands I education.
