The fire broke out in a barn j which housed nearly 60 of the more than 800 horses stabled at the downs. By the time firemen arrived five to 10 minutes later, the barn was engulfed in flames. The groom was William Dormeier, aged 26, brother-in-law of Larry Shipley, one of the top drivers in the downs racing meeting that is now half finished.
