‘Jane Eyre’ starting
A television adaptation of one of the most widely read of English novels, ‘■Jane Eyre”, begins from TV2 on Sunday, replacing “The Brontes of Haworth”, which finished last week. There will be five 50-min-ute episodes. “Jane Eyre” was Charlotte Bronte’s most famous book. Her first novel, “The Professor”, was at first rejected and it did not
appear in print until after her death. “Jane Eyre” appeared in 1847 and her other novels, “Shirley” and “Villette”, were published in 1849 and 1853.
In “Jane Eyre”, what might have been a commonplace tale of the love between a governess and her employer was given a strange and unforgettable atmosphere by the rare Bronte imagination, and thus Lifted above the level
of mere melodrama into one of the world's greatest love stories.
Sorcha Cusack, the younger daughter of actor Cyril Cusack, plays Jane in the television adapt- | ation. Michael Jayston (above) is her employer, Mr Rochester, and Geoffrey Whitehead, who has been seen frequently in British TV dramas and comedies, is St John . Rivers. 1
