Sweets plant for Chch
Most of the chocolate and confectionary plant of A.B. Consolidated. Ltd. is being moved from Dunedin, and might provide employment for 50 persons in Christchurch. The move will begin in June, and may take 15 months. The departments which will be moved produce toffee. licorice, lozenges, and novelty Easter and Christmas eggs - The Maclaggan Street fac-
tory in Dunedin is more than 80 years old, and it was considered financially impracticable to bring it up to the standard required by the company, or that which might be expected by the Health Department for food .manufacturing in the future. , The decision to transfer I production to Christchurch, where there was spare room! 'in an existing factory, was made after all other possible' [sitings had been considered.' said the company’s general i manager (Mr R. J. Binning). Plant transfer About 100 employees will be made redundant during the 12 months from June when the first transfer of plant and machinery will take place. Mr Binning said that under normal conditions many of the 100 would leave the company during the year. ' No decision has yet been made on the production or I relocation of chocolate ! moulding, cracker, and potato ■crisp facilities, the other [ products made in Dunedin. The company intends to sell [the Maclaggan Street factory, [but will retain its warehouse sand distribution centre in the ' city.
A minimum of two months notice of termination will be given to staff, and the company will give every possible assistance in gaining reemployment. Talks with union® Union officials had been informed of the decision and discussions on redundancy and other matters were expected to be held during the next few weeks. A.B. Consolidated is known to have been dissatisfied with its performance in recent years, and has , recently closed its Invercargill depot and a plant at Woodhaugh. just outside Dunedin, to cut costs. In the six months to September 30. last year, the companv had a loss of 5240.000.
