Railcar services

Sir, — Considerable publicity has been given (o the withdrawal of South Island railcar services. I understand that the main reason for this is that the engines have reached the end of their useful life. Have the Railways considered removing the engines from the Fiat twinset railcars and converting these into twin carriage units to be drawn by conventional locomotives? If they were to be refurbished to a standard similar to rhe Southerner then they would make very comfortable travelling units pending their replacement by more modern equipment. — Yours, etc., D. M. JOHNS. February 28, 1976. [Mr T. D. Angus, district ; mechanical engineer, New (Zealand Railways, replies: | “The question of using twin (set railcar bodies as carriages is already being investigated.”]
