The Rangatira
Sir. — Your glib comparison of costs published last week fails to take any account of the cost of travelling time for those of us with older cars and/or young families. In many cases .ravelling to Picton to catch a ferry involves taking one or even two days off work in order to do so and this is very costly. This also happens for those who must travel to Pic jn by rail. Therefore any comparison of costs must include the time iinvolved in getting to PicIton. — Yours, etc., DENISE ANKER. ‘ March 10, 1976. i Sir, — As a privileged visitor to New Zealand for the last three months, I have
■ read with interest your cor- : respondence column on the passing of the Rangatira, (and sympathise with their I concern at the loss of this ‘important communication link for passengers. Howlever, surely this is not the end. In Britain we have suffered similarly, but a progressive commercial undertaking has come forward to take over what was previously an unprofitable government function and provided a service at competitive prices. I would quote the SouthamptonCherbourg cross-channel ferry as an example. In my limited experience I am sure that there is sufficient enterprise in New Zealand for such a venture. — Yours, etc., D. G. DAVIES. March 9, 1976.
