Strong Auckland wins softball
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON. A withering batting display, coupled with some inexcusable Wellington fielding errors, won Auckland the Bensel Cup final at the Rothmans women’s softball championships at Johnsonville -yesterday. The big-hitting Aucklanders clobbered 14 safe hits off the pitching of the New Zealand representative, Irene Keating, who received only scant support from a field which made seven costly errors.
In the sixth innings, with the score locked at 6-6, the Aucklanders unleashed some of the most explosive batting seen at the week-long tournament. They strung five hits together, forced numerous errors and piled on six runs to go to an unassailable 12-6 lead.
The highly-promising young Manawatu side beat Southland 10-8 to take the Mereweather Cup. Wairarapa beat Combined Services 16-11 in the final of the N.Z.S.A. Cup and Auckland B took the N.Z.S.A. (senior B) cup.
