Good apple crop

(N.Z. Press Association) NELSON. The Nelson district apple crop is expected to be about 10 per cent up on last year, this estimate takes into account recent hail damage. The chief horticultural inspector of the Ministry of Agriculture at Nelson (Mr I. Mayo) said that the condition and finish of the crop were particularly good, in spite of pockets of damage from recent hail storms. Allowing for fruit damaged by hail, the estimated apple crop for this season was 59,500 tonnes, or 3.273 m bushels, Mr Mayo said. Last season’s apple crop was 54,323 tonnes, or 2.988 million bushels. Picking has started on small quantities of apples, but the main picking will begin this week when the packhouses start operations. The main export variety is Cox’s Orange, but picking of these will not start until February 15.
