Last month bad one for road accidents
A total of seven killed on Christchurch roads in December, with 223 injured, is testimony to what St John Ambulance men say was one of the worst months for road accidents for a long- time.
The biggest total of road, deaths in a month last year; was in April, when eight persons were killed, but the number of accidents and the’ number of persons injured in April were still lower than December figures — 150 acci-< dents, with 223 persons injured. These figures reflect an average of about 15 accidents a day. However, road deaths in Christchurch were about 30 per cent lower last year than in 1974. Thirty-nine persons were killed compared with 61 in 1974. On Christmas Day, 1975. 37 persons were taken'to Christchurch hospitals by St John ambulances, as a result of 16 accidents. It was one of the worst days for motor accidents and injuries, according to a St John Ambulance Brigade spokesman. All told, the St John Ambulance Brigade attended 1524 accidents in 1975, in! which 2045 persons were injured, compared with 1545 accidents in 1974, in which, 2145 persons were injured. ; Ambulancemen and traffic' officers say that inattention, carelessness, and not driving to suit the weather are the main cause of accidents. Drivers who race through
red lights on one-way streets also cause serious accidents, they say.
