No sign of Dutch runner
Mystery surrounds the whereabouts of the talented Dutch distance runner, Jos Mermens, who was expected to arrive in Christchurch two days after Christmas to train in the sun for the forthcoming Montreal Olympic Games.
It was assumed at one time that the bespectacled New Zealand Games 10,000 metres champion would compete in the special invitation track and field meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park on January 17. But nothing has been heard from him by his athletic friends in Christchurch and hopes are fading fast that he will be here in time. Hermens. who is paying his! own fare to Nev.’ Zealand and! will stay with his brother, Mr; John Hermens, holds three' -world records — 10 miles, one hour, and 20 kilometres.
