New town study supported
The Rangiora County; and Borough Councils have written to the Canterbury Regional Planning Authority supporting its request that the services of the RoL leston Planning Group should be retained.
The authority has asked ' the Ministry of Works and Development (Mr W. L. Young) to allow the group, in association with the authority and local bodies, to try to find the best place or places to take the “overspill” of population from i Christchurch. i Both councils have written to the authority supporting this course. The Rangiora Borough Council’s letter asks the authority to institute a survey to establish siting for a new town, and, if possible,! to use the services of the Rolleston Planning Group before it is dissolved. The council says that, in its view, it is imperative that an urgent decision should be made on the siting of a satellite town, and that the study should be done by the authority and the planning group. A similar decision is conveyed in the County Council’s letter, which says the council believes that a satellite town is necessary, and that it would be wrong to expect existing towns to cope with such growth. The council says that while these towns will con-
I tinue to grow, it is desirable I that they should grow at a | rate at which they can be (serviced by the local bodies.
