Private schools
Sir. — In my naivety, I had always assumed that the primary principle behind all [Church schools was education according to the Christian code. How strange, then, to hear that, whereas the Roman Catholic bishops are confident that this principle is safeguarded in the Integration Bill, the governing bodies of our Anglican and Presbyterian schools still feel that the “special character” of their schools is threatened. Could it be that this “special character” has little to do with religious education and everything to do with class distinction? What is good enough for our Roman Catholic schools is decidedly not good enough for our Christ’s Colleges and Rangi Rurus. — Yours, etc.. PETER HIND. December 19, 1975. New stamp issue Sir, —- I agree with your correspondent, Louise Ward. The rose stamps are ugly, characterless, badly designed. We might have had one of
(the most beautiful issues in ithe world, stamps we were j proud to put on our overseas letters, stamps that philatel(ists everywhere sought after. A good stamp issue is a money-spinner, as many small overseas countries well know. Why would the Post Office deliberately bring out a poor issue at a time when we could well do with a profitable one? I hope with Louise Ward that we are not stuck with these rose stamps for long months, even possibly years. They really look like stickers for children’s playbooks. It would seem that the more artistic our stamps | are, the fewer of them are issued, and conversely. —Yours, etc., I. M. WITHERS. December 18, 1975.
