Letters to the editor
Sir, — For up to 50 years, all over Australia and New Zealand, 1 have extolled “The Press” as the premier paper for its news coverage, excellent and unbiased editorials, and above all, respect for democratic principles. Now this paper — this paper — has stooped to shatter the very basis of democracy; the 'pseudonym, in effect the secret ballot.! Your columns are now closed to people of a decent reticence whose opinions are of real value, and open to the tub-thumping empty drums of men of staw, whose only hope of an eventual obituary notice is by virtue of half-baked opinions on any subject. Yes, it, has been done. And to this has “The Press” descended. I have written to your paper on average about once a year. This will be the last time. I fee! I am burying an old friend. — Yours, etc., F. H. HAYES. I December 18, 1975.
