Book-vans all back in Chch
Ihree vehicles familiar to country residents arrived in Christchurch yesterday after being on the road for 44 weeks. The book-vans, run by the Country Library Service, came together yesterday for annual maintenance. Since January the vans have travelled 8000 miles each, and have all been throughout the South Island once. From left, in front of the vans, are Mrs B. Green (field librarian), Miss M. Overy (librarian in charge), Mr A. Campbell (librarian). Miss P. Jongejans (field librarian), Mr D. Stevens (office assistant), and Miss E. Mac Lean (librarian). During the year each library linked with the service is visited by the book vans three times so that librarians may select their own books from the 2000 or so carried in the vehicle. Books are sent by hamper to isolated places which vans cannot reach. The three vans are away from Christchurch 12 to’ 14 weeks at a time. This is the first year that the vans have been back in Christchurch at: the same time.
