SUSPENSION QUASHED
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The judicial committee of the Avondale Jockey Club has quashed the suspension it imposed last Saturday on a Matamata rider, M. D. Hinton. The chairman, Mr M. L. Stewart said the committee overlooked the fact that Hinton was still an apprentice, having extended his term when it ran out last March. The Rules of Racing did not make it mandatory, he said, for an apprentice to be represented by his employer or another suitable person at an inquiry but this course was recommended in a guide to judicial committees distributed by the New Zealand Racing Conference. Hinton had not been so represented. There was no suggestion, Mr Stewart said, that the committee’s decision would have been different had the rider been represented but in the circumstances it was considered appropriate that the penalty should be quashed. Hinton was suspended up to and including December 26 for causing interference during the running of the high-weight at Avondale on December 10.
