No inquiry into sea tragedy

The insurance claim by Sofrana-Unilines for the working- loss of the company’s freighter Capitaine Bougainville is settled and there will be no inquiry into the freighter’s fire and loss of life last September-. The company’s general manager in New Zealand (Mr C. Jean-Louis) said yesterday that the insurance claim was settled through the company’s head office in Noumea. “The outgoing Minister of Transport (Sir Basil Arthur) sent me a telegram after the
elections saying there was' no intention to inquire into the matter,” Mr Jean-Louis said. “The matter has been, closed.” Mr Jean-Louis said the company had erected a bronze plaque in its Auckland office, displaying the names and positions on board the Capitaine Bougainville of those who lost their lives when the freighter caught fire and was abandoned off Sandy bay.; Northland, on September 3. A total of 16 passengers and crew died. Mr Jean-Louis said the company’s freighter Oriental Surveyor would arrive in New Zealand next month as a temporary replacement on [the Capitaine Bougainville’s; INoumea-to-New Zealand run.;
