Hard man to get out

Brian Hardman, the Christchurch United linkman, and former New Zealand soccer international, has been enjoying a run-scoring, wickettaking feast in suburban cricket for the United “social” team. In 10 innings up to last week-end Hardman had scored 615 runs, including three centuries. And with seven undefeated innings in that list, has a batting average of exactly 205. His bowling has been equally successful, with 39 wickets for 215 runs, for an average of 5.2. The 35-year-old Hardman played first-class league cricket in the north of England before coming

to Christchurch in 1970. Only the fact that he has not wanted to play serious sport all the year round — soccer now takes up almost nine months — has deterred him from joining a higher-grade cricket club.
