Recovery of Hercules

(N.Z.P.A. Staff Crspdt) WASHINGTON, Dec. 19. Polar officials at the National Science Foundation headquarters said today that they still hoped two damaged Hercules could be recovered in the Antarctic before the end of January. One of the two aircraft was damaged early in November, when a jet-assisted takeoff bottle broke loose during take-off at Dome C camp on the Antarctic plateau. Priority is being given to replacing the engine and flying the aircraft out for permanent repairs before cold weather sets in.

Windows smashed. — Fourteen windows in the commercial area of Dannevirke were smashed by a person weilding a broomstick and throwing beer bottles late last night. Two women, working in a takeaway bar, were injured by flying glass.—(P.A.).
