Road toll.— Up to noon yesterday, 588 traffic deaths this year had been reported to the Ministry of Transport. At -the corresponding time last year, the total was 635. The toll this month was 33, compared with 35 at the corresponding time last December. — (P.A)
Derailment — The east coast main trunk line was blocked for nearly five hours on Thursday night, after 4 derailment at Te Puke. The stationmaster, Mr A. R. Taylor, said that seven waggons we., damaged and clearingup took more than four hours.—(P.A.).
