CARTAGE GOES UP

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 19. The Ministry of Transport today increased rural cartage rates 3.7 per cent and town rates 1.8 per cent — less than the road transport firms wanted. The carriers had sought 5.2 per cent and 3.6 per cent increases respectively to recover extra fuel costs and rises in the mechanics* and clerical workers’ awards. The president of the Road Transport Association (Mr I. R. Pheloung) said tfiat

carriers were “extremely disappointed” by the new rates granted by the Secretary for Transport (Mr R. J. Polaschek). “The secretary has recognised the increased cost of fuel, has deferred the award factor for further study, and has eliminated the provision for superannuation payments,” said Mr Pheloung. The cost effect of these awards had always been automatically recognised in the past.
