Cars still in ship’s hold
In a race against time, : Lyttelton watersiders were ; unable completely to unload I the roll-on vessel Coastal Trader before she went into dry dock for her annual survey earlier this week. Nine “sea freighters” and nine cars were left in the ship’s hold when she entered the Lyttelton Harbour Board's graving dock at 3.30 p.m. on Tuesday. The docking manoeuvre had to take place at high tide and. as a result, the ship could not be delayed to discharge the last items of cargo. The situation was aggraI vated by the late arrival .of Ithe Coastal Trader from Auckland, because of indusI trial trouble there. The goods, some of which iwere intended to catch the l Christmas market, will not i now be available until the ; Coastal Trader returns toi ithe roll-on berth on December 24. The Christchurch manager I of the Shipping Corporation lof New Zealand (Mr R. M. I Henshaw) said that the company had regretted having to I make the decision. Every effort had been made, up to 10 days before the Coastal i Trader’s arrival, to avoid | such a situation.
