Nationalist’s complaint
(N.Z. Press Assn —Copyright) LONDON, Dec. 19. A Welsh nationalist leader, Mr Gwynfor Evans, is all steamed up — over a nursery rhyme. He has sent a solemn protest to the Hamlyn publishing group, against the inclusion in one of its publications of the old rhyme, beginning, “Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a thief, Taffy came to my house, And stole a piece of beef.” Mr Evans, the member of Parliament for Carmarthen, mentions the Race Relations Board in his complaint about “these rather offensive rhymes,” and says: “The book circulates on the American Continent and elsewhere outside Britain. “Perhaps you will agree that although these rhymes are, of course, not published by you with any malicious intent, they could inculcate in young children a prejudice against the Welsh people as being dishonest — people who are in the habit of welshing.”
