Australian drivers placated

<N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON. Australian drivers will compete in the Peter Stuyvesant motor-racing series in New Zealand next month after resolving differences with the organisers over prize money.

Max Stewart, the leader of the team now in New Zealand for the Sharp F5OOO test series, said earlier this week that Australian drivers would withdraw if the prize money was reduced, as he had heard it would be, from the $14,000 a race provided last season. Stewart subsequently met the negotiator for the fourrace promoters, Mr Ron Frost, in Auckland, and said that he was “quite happy” with the outcome. He and the other Australians would race in the series after all. Mr Frost said the prize money would remain at $14,000 for each round. The Australian drivers due to race in the series are Stewart. John Goss, Bruce Allison, Kevin Bartlett, Paul Bernasconi, and Ted Edmonds. Edmonds, a former Formula Ford driver from Melbourne, is a recent addition to the F5OOO ranks. He drives an Elfin-Repco and qualified fourth fastest in the recent Philip Island race.

John McCormack would compete in the New Zealand Grand Prix at Pukekohe, although agreement had not yet been reached for him to race in the other three rounds of the series, Mr Frost said.
