Merivale back in lead

Merivale-Papanui regained the lead In the Christchurch senior suburban cricket competition by Mcuring the only outright win on Saturday. Merivale beat Sumner — but only narrowly, after the former had made a bold declaration and Sumner had accepted the challenge. Sumner ended its first innings on Saturday at 128, 49 behind Merivale. In its second innings Merivale declared at 83 for four wickets, J. Shirlaw being 42 not out. Sumner was left to get 132 to win and it was only six runs short of its target when the last wicket fell. In the other three games play was concentrated on the first innings scores. Brian Gore again batted well for 77 not out to help Heathcote reach 131. Although Woolston Working Mens’ Club suffered early setbacks to be 15 for five, T. Williams 26 not out and A. Gibson (24) stabilised the situation ensuring a draw was the result.

For Woolston D. Quested (6/51) and for Heathcote, D. Moody (3/28) were the best bowlers. Belfast lost its second wicket early on Saturday and although B. Pierce (35), B. Churstain (35). B. Harris (34) and S. Holden (23) all played their part, they found the bowling of Lin Sparks (4/88 off 28 overs) and M. Doldem (4/57 off 17 overs) difficult to score from, At Denton Oval Hornby lost its second wicket at 100 and slowly proceeded to overhaul Waltham’s 225 for seven declared and received valuable assistance from

a side that fielded weU below its usual standard. Tliis did not detract from the undefeated 109 from Hornby’s captain, Robert Wilson — a well deserved century.
