Rolleston

Sir, —On December 12 in a letter under the heading of Rolleston your correspondent, M. 8., stated “that appalling monstrosity in Cathedral Square, the Government Life Building, is a prime example of Government planning for Christchurch.” While I concur with his views on the standard of architecture, I must make it clear that this structure was in no way perpetrated by the Government architects in the Ministry of Works and Development. For the record, as far as I know the only building in Cathedral Square designed by Government architects is the Post Office building which many people admire and would wish to preserve. All other structures both good and bad were the responsibility of private enterprise. —Yours, etc., P. F. REYNOLDS, District Commissioner of Works. December 12, 1975.
