Demolition decision approved

i Victoria University has > received approval to deI niolish its historic Hunter building. The Town and Country Planning Appeal Board has reversed a Wellington City Council decision to save the building as an historic place. The board said that the 73-year-old, ivy-covered landmark was of historic interest, but it . supported Victoria University authorities who claimed it would cost too much to save. The decision has removed the final legal barrier to demolishing the building, which has twice been damaged by earthquakes. Wellington City Council is now expected to seek more talks with university authorities and to press for a public appeal to raise the required $1.2 million for antiearthquake restoration.
