1975 ELECTION GUIDE

Close on two million voters can go to the polls tomorrow to make their selection from the 413 candidates seeking election to Parliament. For the first time 18-year-olds and 19-year-olds will be eligible to vote, as will prison inmates. . To help readers, “The Press" has prepared an election chart with which they can follow the returns, the first of which are expected soon after 7 p.m. Candidates have been fielded in all 87 electorates by four parties: Labour, National. Social Credit, and Values. This is the first time Values has fielded a full ticket: three years ago 42 Values candidates stood for election. Twenty-five other parties are represented —some of them by one candidate —an increase of nine since 1972, although the number of candidates seeking election is down by 37. Whichever way the election goes, there will be at least seven new members of

Parliament, although in two instances, Bay of Plenty and Karori, it is likely that former National M.P.’s Duncan Maclntyre and Hugh Templeton will return to the House after an absence of three years. They are standing in seats held for National by two retiring members. Mr P. B. Allan, and Sir John Marshall. Other seats in which the sitting member is retiring are Auckland Central, Dunedin North, Hobson, Onehunga, and Raglan Polling will be held between 9 a.m and 7 p.m. Associated with the General Election poll will be the usual vote on licensing, with the issues being continuance, State control, or prohibition. For many years the liquor licensing poll has been a “formality," continuance carrying the day with a large majority. Almost 15.000 people will be working on the election tomorrow, most of them staffing the 4500 or so polling places.
