Waimakariri’s future

Sir, — I have noted with interest the correspondence concerning the Waimakariri’s future. What disturbs me is the trend it has taken. The latest batch of letters continue to ask the same irrelevant question — did Mr Quigley or the National Party organise the public meeting? This type of petty politicking contributes nothing towards solving the Waimakariri pollution problems. What people are concerned about is the polluted state of the river and how it can be best cleaned up. Mr Quigley has at least done something positive about the problem and should be congratulated. — Yours, etc., LEON HAVILL. November 12, 1975.

Sir, — “P.G.” points out that Mr Quigley organised a meeting to save the Waimakariri when a suitable body — the Kaiapoi Jaycees — had already done the same thing. To justify such a statement “P.G.” would have had to attend both meeting examined remeetings and thus the contradiction arises. The first classification of the river. Mr Quigley’s meeting then expanded on this topic to include broader aspects of the Waimakariri River basin scheme. Both meetings were informative and helpful. If “P.G." has to criticise anyone, I suggest he begins with the local M.P. Mr Burke, who has not attended any of the three meetings concerned with this vital subject. — Yours, etc.,

M. McCABE. November 12, 1975.
