GLOVER IN RUSSIAN
The New Zealand poet. Denis Glover, who is [visiting the Soviet Union with his wife a 1 the invitation of Russian journalists, has learnt that his poetry is being translated into Russian.
Because of the popularity- ■ of his poetry with Russian ■ I literary critics specialising! l in English literature, a [young poet, Lyudmila Vol-, odarskaya, is translating.'Glover’s works with the; ;help of several colleagues,; reports Vladimir Sazanov. of, , the Novosti press agency,' through the New Zealand' Press Association. ' Miss Volodarskaya has. [read all available Glover; I poems in English, and be- ■ lieves they are so interesting; (that they should be pub-i 1 lished in Russian. Mr Glover was invited to Russia to observe the celebrations marking the fiftyeighth anniversary of the October Revolution. During (the war, he was a seaman ini i the Royal Navy and served! [on convoys to Murmansk. Soon after arriving in; Moscow, Mr Glover visited; the office of “Novy Mir”,l one of the largest Russian; literary journals, and had a two-hour meeting with the-editor-in-chief, Mr Sergei; Narovchatov. They met two] years ago when Mr Narovchatov visited New Zealand. Mr Glover was also able to meet several other Rus-; Sian poets whose works heis familiar with in English translation, including Evgeny - Vinokurov, Vadim Sikorsky, and Mikhail Lukonin. The Glovers were full of! praise for Moscow's cleanliness, the width of its I streets, its greenery, and the scope of housing construction, reports Sazanov.
