New tug will have Schottel units
By
JOHN LESLIE
Lyttelton’s new tug will not use the traditional propeller and rudder system of propulsion and steerage. She will be fitted with Schottel rudder propeller - units which look like the; lower portion of an outboard i motor. The Schottel units! will protrude at right angles! from the hull and are designed to turn through 360! degrees. Thus, the thrust of the propellers can be! directed in any direction to! steer the craft. No rudder is! necessary. One of the mam advantages of the Schottel unit is! that it gives similar performance both ahead and astern. The tug Canterbury has! a bollard pull of 22'tons! ahead but only 14 tons as-! tern. With 'the Schottel! units, the hew tug wil] have! a bollard pull of about 29 tons ahead and astern. The! tug Lyttelton II has a bol-l
'lard pull of 11.5 tons ahead. Two of the German-de-signed units have been i ordered for a new tug. They I will be coupled to two 1000 h.p. Mirrlees Blackstone r > engines, which have also ’ been ordered by the Lyttel-: ! ton'Harbour Board. , The engines and propul-1 •ision units were ordered be-l 1 fore the contract was let (to.i ;Sims Engineering) to fac- j i.ilitate early delivery, which; ■,in turn means that the tug! 5 dean be completed on timeji llby March, 1977.
