Trial coal exports approved

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, September 4. Trial export shipments of 20,000 tonnes of Buller coal through Lyttelton have been approved by the Minister of Mines (Mr Colman). “The shipments have been sold to Mitsubishi Chemical Industries, of Japan. Half the order will be shipped late this year and the second 10,000 tonnes will follow within 12 months,” Mr Colman said today. “The coal will not be used as a fuel, but for experiments in a pilot plant in Japan which is being built to produce high grade, granulated, activated carbon, which now sells for $l5OO a tonne in Japan. “If the tests are successful, Mitsubishi Chemical Industries intends to examine the possibility of setting up a commercial plant in New Zealand for making high grade activated carbon here. Preliminary studies are already proceeding.” Activated carbons are widely used overseas in controlling air pollution, in recovering solvents from waste gases, in purifying water—particularly in treating effluent—and as catalysts in chemical processes.
