Capital windiest
WELLINGTON. July 30 New Zealand's “windy city,” Wellington, well deserves its nick-name according to the Weather Office in Wellington. Wellington Airport boasts a mean wind of 17.2 m.p.h. (27 k.p.h.), 10 meters above the ground. The Wellington suburb of Kelburn, with an average wind of 13.7 m.p.h. (22 k.p h.). Is slightly calmer but still windier than any other New Zealand town. Last night, Wellington ensured its windy reputation with gusts up to 92 m.p.h. (148 k.p.h.). New Zealand's second windiest town is New> Plymouth with a windy average of 11.4 m.p.h. (19 k.p.h.). It is followed by Invercargill, Auckland, and Gisborne. Christchurch is in sixth place with 8.7 m.p.h. (14 k.p.h.). Masterton Is at the bottom of the list with an average breeze of 6 m.p.h. (9.5 k.p.h.). America’s windiest city is Fargo, in North Dakota, with an average wind strength of about 14.5 m.p.h. (24 k.p.h.). The so-called windy city, Chicago, holds only eighth place with mean wind strengths similar to those recorded in New Plymouth.
