Fire alarms defective
Applications hv some hotels for renewal of liquor licences have been refused by the Canterbury Licensing Committee because of apparent defects in the hotels’ fire alarm systems.
The licensing committee has also issued a warning that hotels that persist in supplying liquor to a large number of minors will have their suspended. ; In a statement, the comImittee said that the licensees
had a “heavy duty” to see that fire alarm s> stems functioned properly at all times and that regular checks on emergency lighting and ; warning systems were made. In some cases renewal of licences had been adjourned because the hotels had not notified the committee whether the defects had been remedied. The committee said that in the previous year more than 300 minors had been found by the police in only three hotels and one tavern. "Police action against holders of such licences can be expected if this situation persists and the committee will not hesitate to take steps to suspend or cancel licences iin appropriate cases.”
