Stolen car in river
Two police divers helped recover a stolen car from the Waimakariri River, north of the West Melton rifle range, about 6.30 p .m. on Fridaj ■ The car. a brown Mark IV Ford Zephyr, had been missing from Peterborough Street since June 10. I Senior-Sergeant A G. Adcock, who was in charge [of the police party, said that a warrant officer from Burnham Military Camp spotted four car wheels sticking out of the water and notified the police. it had taken an hour to winch the car out of the river, after a cable had been attached to it by the two police divers, he said. The divers had also checked ihe doors and windows of the car. but the swift current had made it too dangerous for them to enter it. “The current was really swift, and made things extremely difficult,” he said. Senior-Sergeant Adcock .said that the bodywork of ’the car had been badly damaged, and all the windows had been broken.
