Amendment opposed

Professional people doing their normal duties might find themselves before a court if Dr G. A. Wall’s proposed amendment to the Crimes Amendment Bill became law, said Dr W. C. Clark, president of the Association of University Teachers, in Christchurch.

Homosexuality was a topic of formal study in medicine, psychology, sociology and religious studies, he said. Lecturers in history and literature referred to it as background. If the proposed amendment became law, he said, some university teachers must either suppress the findings of research which they believed to be valid, or risk prosecution. “Clearly Dr Wall’s amendment is a serious violation of the principle of academic freedom,” he said. Dr Clark said that the association would make representions on Dr Wall’s proposal to the Minister of Justice (Dr Finlay).
