Medical files
Sir, — As a nurse I cannot help but be amazed at the alarm shown by some senior members of. the medical profession at the Police removing medical files for inspection. It has been suggested that the “confidentiality” of these files is at risk. Surely the public and the medical profession are aware that medical files of hospital patients may be read by many people including ward staff, operating theatre staff, X-ray staj, and outpatient staff. The Police are highly respected in our community, and the medical profession has no need to doubt their ability to maintain the similar degree of confidentiality h requires from its medical team members. I feel the Police, in the execution of their duty, have the wellbeing of the community at ] heart, not to mention the maintenance of the good reputation of our doctors. — Yours etc., C. V. AXCELL. Reefton. February 17, 1975.
