Tayler pulls out of games

Richard Tayler, who ensured the success of the 1974 Commonwealth Games by his surprise win in „ the 10,000 metres, has pulled out of the New Zealand Games. After finishing second in a six-mile road race in 28min 13sec at Ashbur-1 ton on Saturday, Tayler said: “I could not do myself or anyone else justice by running when I was not in good shape. “I would have liked to have done at least 27min 30 see to have a chance of / doing well at the Games, seeing that they are only three weeks away.” Tayler has been suffering from a stress fracture in

his left foot which prevents him from sprinting properly. “I was feeling strong during the race and running within myself, but I was not game to get up on my toes,” he said. His time yesterday was a considerable improvement on his race in Temuka earlier in the week, but Tayler still felt that he lacked the necessary “zip” to do his best in the games. A 13-mile road race in Peurto Rico on February 9 is his next goal and he still may consider competing on the United States indoor circuit in February.
