Candidate’s electorate
Mr A. S. Goldsmith, who is contesting the Sydenham by-election as an Independent National candidate, was incorrectly reported in “The Press” on Saturday as having contested the Karori electorate on two occasions. Mr Goldsmith stood for National in Island Bay against Mr A. H. Nordmeyer in 1957 and increased the National vote by 1 per cent at a time when the over-all vote was 5 per cent down. He stood for Island Bay again at the General election in 1966.
During the week-end Mr Goldsmith has been calling on electors in Sydenham and said yesterday he .had had a good reception. Certainly not all he had seen would be voting for him, he said, but no one had been hostile.
He expected that the Labour Party would get a shock next Saturday, Mr Goldsmith said last evening. Many former Labour voters i would not be voting at all or would be voting for him or the Values Party candidate, he said.
