Labour candidate ’shows potential’

Mr John Kirk, the Labour Party’s candidate in the Sydenham by-election shows all the potential his father showed when he started his Parliamentary campaigning in 1954, according to the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Tizard).

Mr Tizard knew the late Prime Minister when the latter contested the Hurunui seat in 1954. Mr Kirk lost the election. Of Mr John Kirk, Mr Tizard said: “He is only at the start of a very significant political career. I am sure he is going to fit into the Labour team and make an important contribution.” Mr Kirk said that the fact that the Labour Government was prepared to make a statement and take action on

the economy immediately before a by-election “does truly show they are providing honest Government.” Mr Tizard was with Mr Kirk at the second of four campaign meetings the Labour Party is holding in the electorate. The Minister of Labour (Mr Faulkner) will address a meeting on Tuesday at Hillmorton High School and the campaign will be ended by the Prime Minister (Mr Rowling) at Cashmere High School on November 1.
