Piggott rode Giacometti, the favourite, to an impressive win as English horses swept the first three places in the *94,942 Champion Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday. In the absence of the French mare. Allez France, the Prix de I’Arc de Triomphe winner, which was withdrawn because of injury. Giacometti was made 4/1 favourite and justified the odds. Piggott sent Giacometti decisively to the front two furlongs from home in the mile and a quarter race and held on comfortably to win by two lengths and a half from Northern Gem (E. Eldin). with Pitcairn (R. Hutchinson) a further three-quarters of a length further behind in third place. Melbourne debut. — Battle Heights, the winner of the Wellington Cup and Sydney Cup, will make his Melbourne debut in the Cox Plate on Saturday and will gallop with Oopik and Bellota at Moonee Valley today.
