SURPRISE WIN
Carlton Prince pays $43 (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. Carlton Prince was the longshot second leg in a $248.15 oneourse double at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting last night. He paid more than $43 to win when he rushed past Winning Smoke less than 50m from the line to win the Second Welcome Handicap. Earlier, Armbro Pine had come out best in a close finish with Classiebawn and Combine to win the First Welcome Handicap; a head and a neck was all that separated the first three. Carlton Prince is a four-year-old gelding by Pacific Hanover from Pacific Maid, raced by Mr L. H. Grant and driven last night by his Tai Tapu trainer. E. M. Ryan. The result of the race looked a foregone conclusion when Winning Smoke raced from a trailing position and put a break of eight lengths on the field by the time he rounded the home turn. It was only in the last 50m that he w’eakened. The concession with Winning Smoke paid $8.35. Royal Sceptre led from start to finish in the Visitors’ Handicap, easily beating Owen John and Pegus by two lengths. He was considered an unlucky fifth by his trainer, D. D. Nyhan, at his last start, but was never under pressure to make amends last night. Brother Eden did not line up at No. 1 at the barrier, was sent to the outside of the second line, and swung round in front of Doctor Finlay, both horses losing at least 13 lengths.
