Dupreez too good in Greymouth first leg
(From Our Own Reporter) • Dupreez, which cast a shoe when failing at his last start in the Banks Peninsula Trotting Cup, showed his class with a convincing win in the Victoria Park Trotting Stakes at Greymouth last evening.
A five-year-old and the youngest horse in the field, pupreez began smartly, settled handy and led for the last 800 m to win by half a length from Hal Good. Trained at Templeton by D. G. Jones for his wife, Mrs N. M. Jones, Dupreez was considered unlucky at Motukarara, but did not put a foot wrong to win the first leg of the T.A.B. double. Jones was uncertain immediately after the race whether he would start him again tomorrow night in the free-for-all. Dupreez is one of five Canterbury horses engaged to race at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting, which opens on Saturday, and he is to leave for the north on Thursday morning. Although he made a smart beginning, he lost his place in the middle stages. Jones moved him forward with a round to go and took the
lead. He did so with so much authority that nothing from then on really had any chance; perhaps with the exception of Hal Good, which came home very well once clear in the straight. Cee Ar finished just as well for third, ahead of the stablemates. Screws Loose and Waipounamu. The favourite, Jiliinda, worked hard for more than a lap to get to the front, but she was there for only a few strides before she was passed by Dupreez.
The Darfield trainer, L. C. May, won his second race of the night, when Laird O’Logan held off Hurricane Star to win the Tasman Handicap and round off the T.A.B. double with Dupreez. May had won the race before with Jerry Onyx. Laird O’Logan had the perfect trail, dashed past Bonnie Charlie in the straight and had enough in reserve to hold off Hurricane Star. Bonnie Charlie was never in danger of losing third, the best of the others. Rosie’s Dream, being three lengths back. Lord Nova, one of the favoured runners, met a check on the home turn when going well and none of the back-markers were -ver near the nace.
