C.A.R.E. disturbed by Govt sport reaction

(.New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 20. The Citizens Association for Racial Equality is "surprised and disturbed” that the Government has interpreted recent moves by the South African Government in sport as a movement towards breaking down apartheid.

In a letter to the Minister iin sport, rather than break it of Sport (Mr Walding), the down.

(Chairman of C.A.R.E.’S sports committee (Mr T. O. Newnham), says that the moves are “quite clearly intended to entrench apartheid

“They involve the possibility of teams representing : separate ‘national’ or racial groups playing against each other on certain occasions, and have been described by the South African Government as a part of their policy of ‘multi-national sport’.” In the meantime, millions of South African sportsmen were forced to play their sport separtely and with grossly unequal facilities, Mr Newnham said. Only by international pressure would the apartheid system be dismantled — linked “of course” with the determination of South African sportsmen opposed to racism, who had made it quite clear they regarded “multinationalism” as a fraud, said Mr Newnham.
