Potatoes up in price

The price of local potatoes at Christchurch produce markets continues to rise — they are now wholesaling at up to $5 a bag. and retailing up to 25c per lb. Potatoes were being sold wholesale last week up to $4.50 a bag.

Continual wet weather since July has left the ground too wet for many growers to dig, and thousands of tons of potatoes have rotted. One wholesaler said yesterday that supplies were shorter than previous years and that prices would continue to rise.

Pukekohe potatoes, usually bought in to supplement the supply, are also scarce. A disease known as potato cyst nematode which stops the potato’s growth is prevalent there.

Any potatoes leaving Pukekohe must be checked by the Ministry of Agriculture, and if affected by the disease cannot be sent away.
