No fuel saved

Motorists should be wary T claims made for fuelsaving devices, a consumer protection organisation in the United States has warned. The organisation has said it has yet to test a device which will significantly improve fuel consumption.

Numerous fuel - saving gadgets were rushed on to the American market when the fuel supply situation was causing concern last year, and since then the makers of some of the devices have been threatened with legal action by several state attorneys. Many of the gadgets

claimed to save fuel by mixing water with the petrol — one shop alone sold 300 of such units in a few days, at $5O each —

but a General Motors engineer has said that water injection gives no fueleconomy benefit. Water-injection units fitted to Second World War fighter aircraft were purely to prevent pre-ignition under heavy loads, and not to save fuel, he said.

One state government has tested a water-injection device, and branded it "worthless.”
