MARCOS AND THE CHURCH

‘Confrontation not wanted’

IN Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) MANILA, August 28.

President Marcos of the Philippines said yesterday that he wanted to avoid a confrontation with the Roman Catholic Church and similar clashes to those experienced in South Korea and South America. Church sources in Manila say that the chances seem fairly bright of the early release of the priest and 20 of his students who were arrested on Saturday when the police raided a Jesuit seminary.

The sources quoted President Marcos’s views after he had presided at a meeting with Church authorities and Government officials. The police have charged the Rev. Rose Blanco, assistant director of the Jesuits’ Institute of Social Order, and 20 seminary students with rebellion and conspiracy to rebellion.

The headquarters of the Jesuit Order in Rome have defended Father Blanco against allegations that he is “a subversive element.”

The Church sources say that the Institute of Social Order is . not anti-Govem-ment, but add that, like all societies committed to social justice, there can be differences of opinion.
