"People should be told of changes’

Councils revising their planning schemes should

make sure that the people affected knew the implications of any changes made, the chairman of the Christchurch Civic Trust (Mr I. G. B. Wilson) said at the annual meeting. This would help deal with objections against building proposals (such as the Sumner high-rise building plan) which complied with district planning schemes but to which local residents objected. At present, the complaints tended to be made too late, said Mr Wilson. “Councils should not just put any suggested proposals in the public notices column of newspapers — people are a bit lackadaisical about reading public notices anyway. “They should try to contact and bring together all the local organisations, and go through the proposals with them and say what they mean.”
