Pointless end to test series

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON.

England and Pakistan drew the third, and final, cricket test of the series yesterday, the last day becoming a pointless exercise long before the close.

The Oval pitch retained its placid character until the end — only 21 wickets fell during the five days of the match — and there was virtually no chance of a result when playresumed yesterday. The England middle-order batsman, K. W. Fletcher, made absolutely certain that the Pakistanis could not win bv grinding to a century in 7hr 40min. ALMOST SLOWEST

It was only 28 minutes less than the slowest hundred by an English player, scored by P. W. Richardson against South Africa in Johannesburg in 1956. England’s first innings did not finish until shortly before tea, when it was all out for 545 — a deficit of 55 — and in the time remaining Pakistan scored 94 for four.

The series was shared, neither side managing a victory.
