A Washdyke trainer, who prefers to remain anonymous, will long remember the running of the Pleasant Point Improvers' Handicap No. 2 at the South Canterbury Jockey Club's winter meeting. The lucky trainer decided he would cover the field in the quinella with Lord Sedick. one of the locally-trained long-shots, and for his $l7 outlay cooped a pool worth $2049.60. Lord Sedick. the 16/17 favourite of 18, did not win but hei did chase the Wingatui-i rained fifteenth favourite, Whistling Cloud, from barrier rise and al-i though never looked likely to! peg back the pacemaker, hei never looked like losing second; either. Whistling Cloud, a member of J. A. Wilson’s team, was one of two long-shot winners for: Wingatui stables. The other was Gateman which, at odds of | nearly 30-to-one. began a fresh, campaign by beating his maiden rivals decisively in the Winchester Stakes. The Gore trainer, R. J. Coch-; rane. saddled two winners. Haste, Ye Back improved from a trail- ; i.’g position to outfinish the pace-1 maker. Kilmore. in .the A. S,l Elvorthv Memorial Brash Hur-: <ll .-s and Lobelie lasted just long; enough to take the honours in! a nose-and-nose finish with Sil-! ver Bill and Dirleton in the! Kingsdown Handicap. The West Coast was also repre-, sented successfully at the meet-1 ing. Melligo. a member of J. C. Hurren’s Hokitika stable, capped; off a very consistent place form, with a narrow victory over the! win favourite, Tatawai Princess, 1 tn the Pleasant Point Improvers’! Handicap No. 1. I
